Selecting the Right Ceiling Fan

Are you in the market for a ceiling fan? There are so many to choose from, it can sometimes feel daunting to even know where to begin. Selecting the right ceiling fan for your room doesn’t have to be difficult. Just follow a few simple rules-of-thumb and you’ll have the perfect ceiling fan for your space in no time!

Fan Size

In the case of ceiling fans, size does matter! It is important that you choose a fan that will fit the space.

Small rooms (bathrooms): Best with fans 36 inches or smaller
Medium-sized rooms (bedrooms): Best with fans between 36 and 42 inches
Large rooms (family rooms, master bedrooms): Fans should be 50 to 56 inches

Ceiling Height

It is important that a ceiling fan be at least 7 feet from the floor, but for efficiency reasons it’s best to have a ceiling fan about 8 or 9 feet from the floor, providing maximum safety and circulation.

Fan Blades

The blades on a ceiling fan aren’t simply a design element, but also a very important indicator of circulation flow throughout the room. The fan blades determine the amount of air being circulated. It’s best to have the blades positioned at a 12-16-degree angle for maximum circulation. Balance is also important to avoid wobbling.

Fan Motor

The motor is the most important part of the fan. It drives the blades while producing quiet operation.

Fan Lights

There are several different types of fan lights to choose from. For instance, downlighting (the lights hang down) produces a nice, ambient lighting for your space. Uplighting positions the light so that it bounces off the ceiling and provides a softer light source. The fan lights are an important part of the overall design of the fan. Lights come in all shapes and sizes — from shades to crystals.

Fan Location

Where you plan to install your ceiling fan is also important. Ceiling fans can be placed inside or outside, depending on your desires. There are specifically designed fans for areas prone to moisture, such as your front or back porch, or even your bathroom. Fans must be approved for wet or damp locations.

Fan Style

Selecting the style of your ceiling fan is the fun part. There are so many varieties to choose from –everything from casual to classy to contemporary.

Fan Installation

While installation might seem difficult, with the right product it can be easy. Ceiling fans come with handy step-by-step instructions; some even come with a support system that allows for free-hand wire connection. A Williams Lighting specialist will be happy to help you find a certified electrician to help do the job.
